Packaging - Basell Orlen Polyolefins

Packaging

Bottles

The packaging, containers and bottles made by extrusion blow moulding includes the packaging of consumer products such as detergents, cosmetics, personal hygiene items and foodstuffs.

Customers choose Hostalen grades made by Advanced Cascade Process (ACP) technology, as well as Lupolen and LDPE grades, for such applications because of the following key properties:

  •  High rigidity/impact resistance
  • Ease of processing
  • High chemical resistance
  • High Environmental Stress Cracking Resistance (ESCR)
  • Reduced wall thickness
  • Reduced weight and quantity of material used

As far as transparent packaging is concerned, we offer Moplen grades. The end products are highly translucent, rigid, and impact resistant.

Films

Thermo-shrinkable films made using LDPE grades are commonly used for collective product packaging (multipacks), or for wrapping industrial or consumer products placed on pallets. A specially-designed oven shrinks the film for such wrapping.

Stretch hood wrappings are used in similar applications. The shrink sleeve film is fed from the roll, cut and hot-tacked on the top (or not hot-tacked, depending on the application), and then it is stretched by clamps. This results in the film being wrapped around products placed on a pallet. After the clamps are removed and the film is released, horizontal and vertical tension provides the necessary fastening strength.

Jerrycans

We have created a new range of HDPE Hostalen grades made using the ACP technology. They are widely used by our Customers who produce jerrycans using the extrusion blowmoulding technique.

Our Customers can confirm that there are several benefits, in terms of efficiency and properties, of using polyolefins for the production of jerrycans. The most common benefits include good processing properties, high productivity, the possibility of reducing wall thickness, and excellent impact resistance. Many of those grades have received UN certification.

Standard HDPE grades used for production of jerrycans have the melt flow rate (190°C/21.6 kg) of between 2 and 10 g/10 minutes. Density ranges from 0.945 to 0.955 g/cm³.

Cosmetics packaging

The cosmetics industry has many requirements when it comes to packaging cosmetic products. Such requirements are very diverse and they include compliance with legal standards, extended durability and aesthetics.

BOPS offers a broad portfolio of standard PP and PE grades for the cosmetics industry. PP random copolymers for injection moulding, which are distributed under the trade name of Moplen, are the largest group of transparent plastics that we offer. Many of those grades are produced not only in Western Europe but also in BOP’s plant in Płock.

The processors who make their products for the chemical sector can choose from a broad range of standard and innovative homopolymer grades, and impact and random Moplen copolymers. This helps them to select a suitable grade that will ensure not only high productivity, but also will meet the end users’ expectations in terms of high aesthetic quality and rigidity of the finished products.

Industrial packaging

BOPS is known as the leading supplier of highly efficient PE grades on the industrial packaging market. They are sold under the trade names of Lupolen and Hostalen. The applications of industrial packaging include large items formed by extrusion blow moulding.

Customers choose products offered by BOPS because they are made using an innovative Advanced Cascade Process (ACP). ACP creates products that have consistently high quality and durability, both of which are necessary for large applications involving extrusion blow moulding. A few grades used in those applications require the UN certification.

Typical applications include Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs), open-head and L-ring drums, jerrycans, heating oil tanks and bottles for industrial applications. Most of those products are manufactured by extrusion blow moulding.

Rigid packaging

Rigid packaging is, in most cases, produced by injection moulding or thermoforming. For many years, PP has been the most important material in the production of this type of packaging. The popularity of PP in the production of rigid packaging is also shown by its increasing global consumption. In many cases, PP offers significant cost savings, excellent processing qualities and great utility properties. In addition, PP is an environmentally-acceptable plastic.

Typical applications of PP include the food packaging segment, products for the chemical sector, and packaging for household use. BOPS offers a rich assortment of standard and innovative PP grades which are produced in the LyondellBasell Group’s plants in Western Europe and in BOP’s plants in Płock.

We are seeing the global increase in usage of various PP grades for injection moulding production of thin-walled utility items and rigid packaging. This popularity comes from a wide array of applications, including food (packaging for margarine, ice-cream, dairy products and dried food), and also the utilization of the In-Mould Labelling (IML) technology.

Injection moulding can also be used to produce very detailed structures with very thin walls, such as openwork laundry baskets or trash cans, or pots for nurseries. PP is a perfect choice for such uses – it offers significant cost savings, ease of processing, and great utility properties.

BOP plants produce several different PP grades with broad development potential, which are recommended for such uses. These include homopolymers, block copolymers and statistical copolymers.

For injection applications, BOPS offers the PP grades created through polymerization. For quick injection (MFR of up to as much as 100 g/10 min), it offers the PP grades with controlled rheology, a broad range of melt flow rates and diverse utility properties.

BOPS is the leading supplier of the PP grades on the Polish market. The PP grades are successfully used by processors who use thermoforming to produce a diversity of rigid packaging types. .

Homopolymers Moplen (with and without the addition of the nucleating agent) combine high rigidity and optimal optical properties, which makes them a perfect choice for transparent containers produced by thermoforming. The properties of homopolymers can be modified by adding a special copolymer Adflex – this produces great-looking transparent packaging and trays with excellent impact resistance in low temperatures, including deep freezing.

For opaque packaging being used at temperatures lower than 0℃, a similar range of applications can be  achieved using impact copolymer Moplen. It guarantees great stability of detailed structures, and resistance to creeping and deformations.

In their applications, Customers choose BOPS products for many reasons, such as:

  • High impact resistance in low temperatures.
  • Very high transparency.
  • Reduction of production cycle times, and higher productivity.
  • Reduced wall thickness.
  • Suitability for using in a microwave oven.
  • Recycling opportunities.
  • High chemical resistance.

Foams

For the extrusion of plastic sheets using the physical and/or chemical foaming process, processors choose one of our LDPE grades. The key advantages of foam products include reduced weight/costs (lower density), reduction of vibrations, sound attenuation, thermal insulation, a broad temperature range in which the products may be used, aesthetic qualities and special tactile properties. In addition, they offer excellent recycling capabilities and many other environmental benefits.

Corrugated plastic sheets

Corrugated plastic sheets (or corriboards) refer to a wide range of highly durable and stable extruded twinwall plastic-sheet products with vertical frameworks. They can be used as advertising boards, in corrugated cardboard cartons, in recycled multi-use packaging, office supplies, etc.

The PP grades offered by BOPS for the production of corrugated plastic sheets have a high resistance to melting, low level of gel inclusions, good rigidity, and high impact resistance. They also have great downgauging properties, and can therefore provide significant savings in terms of weight and costs.

Processors choose our grades to produce corrugated plastic sheets with the following features:

  • Lightweight.
  • Good weight-to-durability ratio.
  • High water resistance.
  • High chemical resistance.
  • Good dimensional stability.
  • Good printability with adequate corona treatment.
  • Wide selection of colours.

Crates

A wide assortment of PP Moplen grades meet the expectations of processors from the crates segment of the market – that is, crates used for transporting foodstuffs and other goods. Lightweight folding systems, impact-resistant crates, long multi-use containers and crates resistant to stress whitening are some of the applications sought by the Customers who use BOPS grades.

The Clyrell grades, with high transparency and durability, are used to produce transparent crates with high impact resistance.

Stand-up pouches and bags

As an excellent alternative to glass or metal products, processors increasingly turn to PP and PE grades to produce stand-up pouches and bags. Our Customers now can produce lighter packaging at lower cost.

Customers choose our products for the following reasons: competitive prices, easier processing of raw materials, easier to fill with content, easier to transport and lower transport costs, as compared to products made from traditional materials.

Other features include:

  • Enhanced stretching or shrinking capabilities.
  • Better thermal flexibility and resistance compared to paper or cardboard.
  • Higher impact resistance compared to glass, paper or cardboard.
  • Higher neutrality, i.e. lower chemical interaction, than metal cans.
  • Flexibility of design, giving a better ‘shelf presence’.
  • Resistance to intrusions.
  • Ease of handling.
  • Possibility of production in small or large quantities.

Tubes

Flexible tubes are used for packaging pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. Optimal mechanical properties are achieved through use of multiple polyolefins-based materials in each particular part of the packaging (cap, head and body).

BOPS offers PE grades which are used by processors to produce flexible tube elements, such as the head and body. These products are characterized by high resistance to stress corrosion, are flexible and can easily be hot-tacked. They are made by extrusion or injection. If Customers want to use multilayer tubes, we may recommend our special Adflex products which improve the aesthetic properties of the external layer.
